ATCO to lead noise reduction
CALGARY, Alberta – ATCO Noise Management has been awarded four contracts valued at approximately $10 million to design, manufacture and supply technologically advanced buildings using its proprietary silencing technology at the Long Lake integrated oil sands project being developed in northern Alberta, Canada, by OPTI Canada Inc. and Nexen Inc.

ATCO Noise Management has also been contracted to complete detailed site modeling and mapping of all noise generated at the new project under development 40 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray to ensure all operations meet or exceed stringent new Alberta health and safety regulations introduced last year, the company said.

“ATCO’s proprietary technology complements the innovation developed by the partners of the Long Lake integrated oil sands project,” said Boris Rassin, President, ATCO Noise Management. “ATCO will significantly eliminate noise allowing for regulatory compliance, increased operational efficiency, safety, and a reduced need for the use of any hearing protection.”

The contracts call for the company to design, supply and install ATCO’s acoustical walls, roofs and ventilation systems for the Air Separation Unit, Pressure Swing Absorption, Soot Cake, and Hydrocracker buildings.

The noise from the machinery will be reduced to below 85 dBA outside the buildings. Additional noise mitigation measures will be implemented inside the buildings which, in combination with the highly noise-absorptive building shell, will result in a safe, comfortable workplace. The site installation will take place in 2006 and 2007.

Joint Venture partners OPTI Canada Inc., and Nexen Inc. are developing the Long Lake integrated oil sands project in the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta. The $3.5 billion Long Lake Project received regulatory approval in 2003. It consists of approximately 72,000 bbls/d of SAGD bitumen production integrated with a field upgrading facility using the OrCrude™ process and commercially available hydrocracking and gasification.
